PhoenixmlDb.Core
Core types, interfaces, and XDM (XQuery Data Model) implementation for PhoenixmlDb — a modern embedded XML/JSON document database for .NET.
What's in this package
- Database interfaces —
IDocumentDatabase,IContainer,IDocumentfor storing and retrieving XML/JSON documents - XDM node types —
XdmElement,XdmAttribute,XdmDocument, etc. — the W3C XQuery Data Model - Transaction model —
IReadTransaction,IWriteTransactionwith MVCC snapshot isolation - Index configuration — path, value, full-text, and metadata indexes for fast queries
- XML parser and serializer — parse XML into XDM trees and serialize back
- Atomic value types — dates, times, durations, and other XSD types with correct semantics
When to use this package
Directly: If you're building a storage provider, query engine integration, or tooling that works with XDM types.
Indirectly: This package is a dependency of PhoenixmlDb.XQuery, PhoenixmlDb.Xslt, and the CLI tools. You typically don't reference it alone unless you need the core types without query/transform capabilities.
Quick example
using PhoenixmlDb.Core;
using PhoenixmlDb.Xdm.Parsing;
// Parse XML into an XDM tree
var parser = new XmlDocumentParser();
var result = parser.Parse("<order><item>Widget</item></order>");
var doc = result.Document;
// Navigate the tree
var root = doc.Children[0]; // <order> element
Console.WriteLine(root.StringValue); // "Widget"

Minor because a schema-validated node's type annotation changes: a node of a union type is annotated
with the union, not with the member its value matched. A host that reads `TypeAnnotation` of such a
node sees the union's name. No API is removed or changed; serialized output does not change. The
database engine's gate on this release candidate (df34ec2) was identical to its 2.5.0 baseline.
- **Documentation: `IDocument` is a handle, not a snapshot.** Its documentation said the document is
an immutable snapshot taken when it was retrieved; a read returns one committed version, whole,
and which version is the implementation's to define (the engine: the version current when the
read starts, or that of the enclosing read transaction). No code changes.
- **An element in several substitution groups (XSD 1.1) loads.** The XSD 1.1 compatibility layer
keeps the first head in `substitutionGroup`, which the XSD 1.0 processor reads, and lists every
head as expanded names in `urn:phoenixmldb:xsd11-compatibility:substitutionGroups`, an attribute
the declaration keeps (`XmlSchemaElement.UnhandledAttributes`). The schema did not compile.
Validation sees the first head only. QT3 substitution-020..025, with the XQuery change.
- **Behaviour change: a node validated against a union type is annotated with the union, not with
the member type its value matched** (XDM 3.1 §3.3.1.2: the annotation is the governing type).
`XmlDocumentParser` passes the union to `SchemaTypeAnnotator`; the annotator computes the typed
value, which still comes from the first member the value is valid for. With the member as the
annotation, `element(*, M)` matched an element declared with the union type U, and
`element(*, U)` relied on union membership to match it. An xs:ID member still makes the content
an ID. W3C XSLT match-195, match-211, with the XQuery and XSLT changes.
